The following is a partial list of
translation projects that SLTI has conducted over the
past few years.
Sigma Assessment Systems
SLTI adapted to Spanish a verbal and quantitative
aptitude battery so that it can be used for employee
selection in Latin-America. SLTI also translated the
ancillary test publications for this test. We also
provided Sigma with a review of the Spanish translation
of another test developed for employee selection by
Sigma.
Michigan Department of Education
SLTI conducted an independent review of state
assessments in mathematics, science, and social studies
in Arabic and Spanish at seven grade levels. SLTI also
created video versions of these assessments on DVD in
Arabic and Spanish. These versions are used by the
state as an accommodation for limited-English-proficient
students taking state assessments.
Network Omni
SLTI translated or adapted a battery of language
proficiency screening measures and telephone
interpreting tests in different languages (Japanese,
Korean, Vietnamese, Hindi, Tagalog, Haitian Creole, and
Polish) for this major US provider of telephone
interpreting services.
New Mexico Public Education Department
SLTI conducted a translation verification study of the
New Mexico Mathematics Standards-Based Assessments in
grades 3-9. In this study, SLTI investigated the
appropriateness of the transadaptation of the New Mexico
Mathematics Standards-Based Assessments into Spanish.
The New Mexico Department of Education submitted the
final report prepared by SLTI to the US Department of
Education. The Department accepted the report as
evidence that the Spanish language versions of its
mathematics assessments test the same knowledge, skills,
and abilities as the original versions in English.
New York State Education Department
In 1999, SLTI began translating state assessments in
grades 4, 5, and 8 into Spanish, Haitian Creole, and
Chinese and five of the New York Regent's Exams into
five languages (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Chinese,
Russian, and Korean). SLTI prepares high quality tests
booklets for New York in QuarkExpress and/or InDesign,
two well know desktop publishing programs
GED Testing Service
SLTI translated or adapted multiple forms of the GED
tests into Spanish and French. There are five tests in
the GED battery. The tests of Writing and Reading were
adapted to the other language. The tests of Social
Studies, Science, and Mathematics were translated. SLTI
also translated the test administration manual and other
ancillary materials for the GED Testing Service.
Harcourt Assessment Inc.
SLTI has done the following translation projects for
Harcourt Assessment’s clients. SLTI translated and
reviewed the Guide to Understanding Your MCAS Parent
Guardian Report in 10 languages (Arabic, Cape Verdean
Creole, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Haitian
Creole, Khmer, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and
Vietnamese) for the Massachusetts Department of Education. SLTI also
translated math, health and English language arts tests
to Spanish, Portuguese, Laotian, and Cambodian for the Rhode Island Department of Education. Moreover, SLTI
translated and typeset the FCAT Parent Letter to Haitian
Creole, the Guide to Interpreting FCAT results to
Haitian and Spanish, the Parent Guide to Florida Writes
in Haitian and Spanish, and the Student Guide to Florida
Writes in Haitian and Spanish for the Florida Department of Education.
Measured Progress
SLTI has done several translation projects for Measured Progress and its clients. SLTI translated into
Spanish the Rhode Island Health Tests for grades 5 and 9. SLTI
translated into Spanish a Grade 10 Math Test, four
multiple-choice secondary math tests (Math 7,
Pre-Algebra, Elementary Algebra, and Geometry), and
three multiple-choice elementary science tests (Grades
4, 5, and 6) for the Utah State Office of Education. We also translated
into Spanish two complete forms of the Utah Basic Skills
Test (Grade 10) and two sets of sample test items.
Moreover, SLTI translated into four languages
(Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Russian, and
Spanish) Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment (MEPA) Shell and Parent Guide and typeset
them using InDesign. SLTI also translated and formatted in Word the Illinois Alternate Assessment score report for
parents in Spanish.
American Institutes for Research
SLTI has done translation projects for clients of the
American Institutes for Research (AIR). Since 2006, SLTI
has translated, reviewed and revised the fall and spring
Parent Information Booklets, in multiple grades and
subjects, in thirteen different languages (Simplified
Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, Vietnamese,
Marshallese, Ilokano, Laotian, Samoan, Tagalog, Tongan,
Visayan, and Chuukese) for the Hawaii
Department of Education. All translated booklets
were laid out in either Quark or InDesign. Additionally,
SLTI translated, reviewed, and revised the Ohio Proficiency and Achievement Tests (Reading and
Math) in Grades 3-8 to Spanish, and designed the
bilingual booklets and page layout (DTP) in Quark and
graphics in Adobe Illustrator under secure conditions
for the Spring 2004, 2005 and 2006 administrations. SLTI
also translated, reviewed, and revised the Ohio
Proficiency and Achievement Tests (Reading, Writing and
Math), created audio versions in 5 languages (Arabic,
Japanese, Russian, Somali, and Spanish) on CDs under
secure conditions for the Spring 2004 administration.
DRC
SLTI has done translation
projects for the Data Recognition Corporation (DRC) and
its clients. SLTI translated, reviewed, and revised the
mathematics tests in the Pennsylvania System of School Assessments (PSSA) in
grades 5, 8, and 11 and reviewed the bilingual
Spanish-English booklets for the Spring 2005
administration. SLTI translated the PSSA math tests
grades 4-8, and 11 in November 05. SLTI also edited the
translation and layout for the Spanish Directions for
Administrators (Mathematics Sections) for Grades 4, 5,
6, 7, 8 and 11. For the past 3 years, SLTI has
translated PSSA mathematics items, and revised the
Directions for Administrations in Spanish for grades
4-8, and 11. Furthermore, SLTI translated, reviewed, and
revised the 2008 Idaho Parent Brochure in Spanish.
TCE Medical Interpreting Test
Funded by the California Endowment, SLTI has developed a
series of Internet-based readiness tests for medical
interpreters. These tests are designed to provide a
measure based on relevant listening, speaking and
reading tasks and to determine whether individuals have
the necessary level of English and Spanish ability to be
hired as medical interpreters. The tests measure aspects
of medical interpreting such as understanding English
and Spanish in a variety of registers, processing
information presented in the source language, and
expressing that information in the target language in
the appropriate register.
